Sites of Interest to Christians
Nazareth
This ancient city in northern Israel is currently the largest Arab city in Israel. It is a political, economic, and cultural center for Israel’s Arabs, and often the first to show current trends in the Arab sector’s views and activities.
Church of the Annunciation
This Catholic Basilica in the center of Nazareth is where, according to Christian tradition, the home of Mary, mother of Jesus, was situated and where the angel Gabriel conveyed his message to her. The Basilica is one of the most important churches worldwide, and has become a renowned marker of the city.
Kinneret – Sea of Galilee: Lookout from the Mount of Beatitudes
The Sea of Galilee, known in Israel as the Kinneret, is of importance in Christianity as the place where several miracles occurred: where Jesus walked on water, was baptized there, and where he calmed the stormy winds. Where the Jordan River leaves the Kinneret we find the Jordanian site where traditional river baptisms are conducted. Some third of the Christian pilgrimage sites in Israel are around the Kinneret and the Galilee.
Capernaum
According to the New Testament, Jesus made Capernaum the center of his activities for a lengthy period, and some of the twelve disciples also lived here.
Church of St. Peter’s House in Capernaum
This Catholic church is situated in the Capernaum National Reserve northwest of the Sea of Galilee. The building is traditionally considered the home of St. Peter as early as the first century CE, and considered the first church in the world. In 1990 a new church was built around it to provide it with protection.
The Church of the Twelve Disciples
This Greek Orthodox church in Capernaum is found on the Sea of Galilee’s northern coast. It is tiny, adorned with red domes, and contains colorful windows that charm the atmosphere inside. Inside is a red marble icon and almost all its walls are adorned with rich frescoes.
